Hi, can the vine past the pumpkin feed the pumpkin or is it just a sink? I have a big problem with svbs this year and I hate to cut off any leaves that can do the job. Thanks for the info. Bonnie

If something happens to the basal crown then the growth after the pumpkin is capable of keeping things going (somewhat). If the crown & main are good I feel that the main after the fruit does little good or bad. Unless you have no other choice, I'd keep it just in case.

So, (begginer here) does that mean you can cut the secondary vines off and the vine past the pumpkin and it won't kill the pumpkin?

Fog, I have one bumping 600 pounds at the end of the main. I have about 18 inches of vine past the stem so to answer your question, no it won't kill the fruit.

My best pumpkin at the nursery at Jareds has no main past them pumpkin, it snapped long time ago......It sure makes it easy to relieve stress on the stem too.

I blew a 1005 Miller up this year with the growth after the pumpkin!! I lost the stump and ALOT of the leaves before the fruit at about day 10. I figured mise well grow past the pumpkin to get a bigger food factory going... Soon as I got those new 6-8' vines shut down it exploded with growth and blew the blossom. It was tapeing 560 on about day 45. This proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can continue putting on pounds with the plant past the fruit.

I broke the main right after the fruit on one of mine, it has a very thick brittle stem. The plant is large but the pumpkin is small. I believe that the main after the pumpkin helps alot.

Seems to be a very popular debate. I HAD to cut the main right at the stem due to stem stress, it's still growing but not near the pace it was before the stem stress. It has a nice big gaping hole on one side of the stem, but no main vine left there on the other side of the pumpkin. So far so good, it's not dead yet and hasn't quit. However, this pumpkin is only about 230 pounds, but don't expect too much more out of this guy.
