What the plan is, is to lift a 700 pounder using a tripod but not with a lifting ring. The idea is to simply use a pumpkin tarp that has sturdy hand-holds. Get that under the pumpkin and then thread a sturdy rope in and out through the hand-holds. Gather the rope with a clevis pin, and then lift with a chain hoist and a tripod. Thoughts? It seems to me that this should work.

Hey Cliff, That my plan also except I have a friend in the Wrecker business and we are going to hoist it with the wrecker boom. I hope it works!

Hi, I have done that with some 300 pounders and it worked fine. As long as the hand holes are strong I don't see any difference in that or your hands. Take care, Doug Jn. 3:16

Cliff, Invest in a lifter! You will use it year after year. You can borrow mine if you want. Actually the only problem that I see with that idea is that the top will be fairly narrow and may "pinch" the pumpkin causing more scrapes to the skin of the pumpkin.

Thanks. I had some respond privately. It seems that it should work, but you have to take it slow. It's pretty tricky getting the rope and the tarp to evenly line up... you need just the right amount of slack... and the corners of the tarp will raise up higher than the sides. But it can be done if you take your time and are careful.
Yeah, I'll get a lifting ring eventually. Having a 1000 pounder would make my decision easier!
