I'm not sure if this is a picture of pumpkin plant but it sure looks like the first AGP grown in space.

I wonder if the plants know which way to grow, because gravity controls the directions of root and shoot growth.

|
There's little organelles inside root cells that change position due to gravity. They cause plant hormones to change location within the root, causing the root to grow down (this, of course, is the simplified version). The same hormones have the opposite effect on shoots, causing them to grow away from the gravity source. Of course, light factors into the direction shoots grow too.
