Most plants are going to turn out to be what you put into them. Good soil, good fert program, insecticide program etc will equal a good plant. If you don't put the work into them they won't do squat! You are asking all these questions about "big vines", "big leaves", and "monster plants". You're missing the whole idea here. The idea is to grow big pumpkins not big plants and a big plant does not automatically mean big pumpkin. I've seen some big time growers here say that they have raised some monster pumpkins on the runt plant of the patch. The good seeds are those with genetics to grow big PUMPKINS, not big plants. I don't know of many growers who are concerned much about the monster plant. Just chill out my friend, I know you are eager and thats a good thing! That attitude will make you a good grower but do a lot of reading here and gain all the knowledge you can. Wait until this fall and you will be able to obtain seeds with the characteristics to grow that giant pumpkin that you are seeking...forget about the giant plant.

I probably won't have any seeds to give away this year, unless you want one from one that ways 100pds or so. But, I could send you a slice of cheese, just send me a little box with dry ice in it.

Don't worry about having seeds to give away this year. I had none my first year either but there are many generous growers here who will be more than willing to hook you up.

I'd recommend first getting your soil dialed. You can have the best seed in the world and if your soil isn't right you won't get anything big.
ANY seed can grow a big one. Any soil cannot.

Chris is so right about the soil. After you get it ammended in the fall get a soil test done. My main patch which Im fortunate to grow on is from a organic farmer. Hes never grown pumpkins or squash on it and hes added loads of manure and compost over the years. Its been ammended with molasses and everyother organic compound you could think of. Hopefully if all my plants dont die from svbs ill make him proud. When I tilled it I found the remains of hundreds and hundreds of tiny white flakes which I found were egg shells Im not sure about why their in there but if its working dont fix it I guess.

That's for sure, I thought manure & compost would do it. The offer for cheese still goes.
