I lost 3 out of six. Actually 4 but the pumpkin is surviving on the back main. With all the issues we face (disease, bugs, weather, animals) how many plants does the average grower lose each year. I understand that results will vary but I'm just curious.

I purchased a stihl mister to try and avoid these situations but they still nailed me. I guess I need to invest in some strong pest/fung next year. The stuff they sale and lowes/HD isn't cutting it.

ron and i have been at it for a long time. its a crap shoot but usually we dont loose plants anymore because of our spray and soil conditions but, as far a studs vs duds you can usually count on having approximately 3 out of eight pumpkin selections that will not produce as you would like. sometime up to 50 % dont make the grade.
thats the advantage a grower with space for say 8 to 10 plants has over the grower who cabn only grow 1 or 2.

The average I've seen is 50% mortality.

So far o% mortality but the year is still young. Like Pap said, keeping a slug alive isn't a whole lot better than ripping it.

its unfortunate but we have streamlined the process what with seed genetics and plant pruning ,etc, to a point where we are stressing the plants and pumpkins to a near breaking point. example several years ago when 1,000 pounds was a great accomplishment you never heard much about blossom splits and foaming. both i believe are stress related to because of rapid growth. i never had a dud blow a blossom or foam at the base pap
