I didnt get the vine up in time on this pumpkin,It kept growing over the vine but I did put styrofoam under the one side to keep it off the ground some.

i have had them before and the stem stress has been a concern. you can successfully excavate the dirt below tthe main vine to relieve that problem. eventually you are gonna have to cut leaves in the front of the fruit to increase air flow. cut them now an you can stick your nose in there to see whats going on. it can work. peter

Did you get any good weight on these pumpkins over the stem, and did they last for you.

Hi, I grew a 1139 completely on it's stem. I did excavate enought of the soil for the stem and the vine and my head so I could keep a close eye on the stem. It was picked on the 100th day. P.S. I will never do that again.

Marty,
I've done it a couple of times. worked out ok for me. in 2005 I got a 920.5 lb-er of the 1144 Hester. The stem broke off when we harvested it... here area few are pictures ...

at the time it was the 2nd largest pumpmkin ever grown in Utah.
... I'd try to clear away the dirt from stem as other have suggested. personally I think growing them stem down some helps reduce the stress on the blossem end.

I have a wheel of a pumpkin tipping back over the vine, I have made styrofoam wedges to hold it and today wedged a piece of fire wood with styrofoam bwtween it and the pumpkin to help hold it. We will see what happens, going away for the weekend so hope all is well when we return.
