I'm a few weeks behind this year too and am going to let the secondaries before the pumpkin reach the desired length before dead heading them. I think that will help more in the long run.

I would let the main grow if possible. I asked the question a while ago. The plant will take energy from behind the fruit if necessary. It will still get energy up front as well. The reasoning for burying the secondaries is to allow the energy to flow to the fruit and not the plant. I think Alan Reynolds stated,"You ain't growin salad."

Dead Head a few vines at a time, we dont want all that energy going Pop.....Same goes with large culls.....take two days to sever their relationship with the mother ship.

I always try to have everything terminated by day 30. You are some behind so you may consider terminating earlier. 500 sq ft is plenty big though.
Good luck!
