I have seen a spurt of growth and new secondaries growing from the basal crown. Almost like its starting over again.....New leaves that really contrast the older burnt out ones.....but you can see they are strapped for getting some N, Ive been greening them up with my Agro-K......is working...... Are these robbing my energy? I kind of think the new growth provides some new juice back at the stump but its just a feeling.....

I was wondering the same thing. Since Leaves give energy to the pumpkin and when they get old they are no good anymore. Can you let new growth on the vine grow to take the place of the older leaves? Gotta have leaves! Maybe just letting it grow enough to get a few leaves?

That is a conundrum..that growers have pondered for years. Is the new green growth taking away energy from the weight gain on the pumpkin. Or does it contribute it. My thinking is we prune when the plan reaches the size we want to stop growth of the plant. So the new growth should be removed.

How about just letting a couple of these develope for 6 or 8 ft. then terminate? Dont let them grow out of control, but do them just like you would a normal secondary on a main... Maybe fill in some old burnt areas. My experience is they grow very fast and shouldnt take from the fruit for very long...

I usually let a few new leaves fill in around the basal crown, if they form. My thinking(guessing really) is that a few new leaves or short vines shouldn't take much, if anything from the pumpkin. I don't know if they will help much, if any though.

you already had your salad. its time to move on to the main course. if your plant is the proper size you dont need any additional new vines taking energy away from the fruit growth cycle pap

I just want a leaf or two to take the place of old leaves dieing, not a whole new vine.

Crickets, I'd let a few new leaves grow in. Maybe they'll help you get a couple extra pounds at weighoff. It seems like these new bright green leaves could help the food factory, at least a little bit.

I'v also noticed any new leaves are more prone to get dieases than mature leaves. Something else to consider.

Well the reason i leave a few leaves to fill in -is so sun wont burn stump , but then again it gets real frying at times here

Pap mentioned no additional vines needed, if the plant's at "proper size". That makes good sense to me. In answer to Cricket...I don't know if a few new leaves would make much difference either way, unless you have a real small plant. If I see a few are forming at/near the crown, I keep them...I just don't let new vines form there.

Paps...the Wiz needs glasses VERY bad !! He won't admit it. Thinking he secretly wears contacts..lol ! Funny you ask that today Wiz... when spraying "Ronny" (1502) tonight I noticed a new 12inch vine coming out of the stump. Was going to show this to you tommorow. Was wondering what Paps would think. Since my plant is a couple weeks behind, should I let this go Paps?? Thanks !!

Are you sure that vine you refer to is not a root? we have quite a few that will grow out from under the stump and "EXPOSE THEMSELVES"
i have never seen a vine grow out of the stump - I GUESS ITS BECAUSE WE CLEAN OFF OUR STUMPS A COUPLE TIMES A SEASON AND DO NOT ALLOW ANY GROWTH TO FORM

LongBeard dont you have to go and feed your monkeys? Now getting back to Bizness...The new growth is easy to spot since all the first leaves now looked to be spent, but I terminated everything now, Paps thanks its time to go to the main meal.
