When the season is over and I have a big fat pumpkin on my lawn, I want to know how to clean and store some of its seeds. Any suggestions, procedures or comments on cleaning and storing them would be much appreciated.

We thoroughly wash the seeds with a drop of antibacterial dish washing soap. Then we put them on window screen material and place in a rack made from pvc. We keep a fan blowing on them until completely dry then store in plastic storage containers.

Oh so you just seperate the nice looking seeds from the pulp, wash, and thoroughly dry them? That sounds straight forward...

I have never done it but I thought you used some bleach in the water?

Hmm...I'll keep that in mind. I also saw that somewhere. Hopefully some other people will give suggestions as well but thanks so far!

Be careful if you decide to use a dehydrator as they can get too hot and cook the seeds....I also think that if they dry too fast due to heat one can "crack" them too, although they will still grow, just not last as long.

A light bleach solution works but we found that antibacterial soap does the trick and is not as harsh on the seeds or your hands. We also turn (stir) the seeds many times when they are drying. Once dry we peel (slip) the transparent coat off, then store.

Make sure the seeds are left to dry for a few weeks or more. Otherwise they will mold up in the bag. Also, store them in paper not plastic.

Rob, we have always stored ours in the divided plastic containers that you can put craft stuff in or fishing lures. We keep them in a closet and have never had any problems. You're absolutely right though, they have to be DRY. Sherry

Do any of you use rice, or anything, to absorb moisture, just in case the seeds aren't quite dry enough?
