Most competitive growers grow only 1 pumpkin per plant on the main vine. Others (like me) sometimes grow 2 pumpkins on a plant (one on the main and one on a secondary) so that there is a backup should one of them go wrong.
This year, I have 1 fruit on each plant cause I am about 3 weeks behind.

1, if you have more than one growing on the plant the size will be devided up amongst all pumpkins, you won't have 1 giant you'll have 2 or 3 smaller giants.
