every year just like clockwork especially afer a couple weeks of humidity the foamers rear their ugly heads we have frozen a sample and the sngpg is making arrangements with cornell university to completely annalize the liquid. mainly we want to know 1. whats is its name? 2. what causes it? 3. how do we prevent it? 4. how do we cure it?

Interesting, we have heard of foaming stumps but have never experienced one in our patch. Could be because our humidity is so low over here. Was the 1502 or the 1450 a foamer?

Anyone have a picture of this stuff? I had two spots on secondaries that did something similar to this. It dried up within a couple of days and there was no obvious ill effects to the vine that it occured on.

I think you'll know when you have a "foamer". A few years back I had a beautiful 845 Bobier going, a bad storm with microburst winds hit. A day or two later, I noticed the stump was squirting water in several places, kinda like kids shooting squirt guns. The following day, the stump looked like someone sprayed Burma Shave all over it...not a pretty sight...or consequence!!!!!!!

yes i cut the base and three sets of sides out last year on the 1450 when she was around 1050 pounds ( the benefit of having a large plant is evident here)
sometimes you can cut a hole thru the base and allow mr. foamy to run out and also you can slit the top of the base and suck mr. foamy out with a turkey baster
you could also spray the cut area with deluted peroxide
if all else fails cut the stump and any sides where its foaming off the plant

Sclerotinia & Fusarium can both cause the dreaded white foam but I suspect there ate other vascular disorders as well.
