First Timers Take Three

My question is: if your secondary vine is out performing your main vine. Which pumpkin do you keep?

At what point in the growth do you make that choice? The secondary vine is as big if not bigger than the main. The pumpkins are about the same distance from the root. All vines have been buried and tertiary vines have been cut from the secondary. Keep in mind that our weigh-off isn't until Oct. 20th. We try not to expose the plant to an overnight temperature of 50 degeers. Well heck it's almost Aug. and it's only 53 degrees at night. We don't receive any rain at all at this time of the year so everyday is the same and I mean the same. I love it but not sure what is happening this year.

On the same plant, we have a pumpkin with a diameter of 20 inches at day 8 (on the main) and 7+ inches at day 2 on a secondary (it's a little monster!!!).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the old timers say the sidevine pumpkins grow faster for the first 10 days and the main vine pumpkins eventaully pass them up .

Think of what that main vine pumpkin would look like with the weight of that secondary pumpkin added to it.When you cut that secondary pumpkin the juice has to go somewhere.
