Sort of Sunny Sometimes, WA

When I was out in the patch today I was reminded of a discussion that took place during the PNWGPG/PGVG Spring Seminar. A well known grower stated that it was crazy to wear shorts in the patch because your legs get all scratched up. What do you all think? Is wearing shorts in the patch a sign of weakness or strength?

Depends on what's in right now Erin. You haven't said what shoes or other accessories are involved here.

And let's not forget those unsightly organic stains to be had if you have to crawl in after tertiaries. You also didn't say if hose is to be worn later that evening. Definitely not enough info.

You also didn't say if the hair is to be worn up or down.

Erin,
Dean is going to review "Green Jeans" in an upcoming Main Vine. They have solid fronts with padded knees and are open in back, so you can wear your shorts and not tear up your tender, fishbelly white Pacific NW skin. (You do live in "Graysville", afterall.)

Erin, being one that was involved in the 'in-depth' conversation, I think it is quite 'manly' to be able to wear shorts in amongst these scratchy demons. I don't know how Pete can wear long pants in the garden. After about 1/2 hr in the garden I've already sweated through everything. I can't imagine wearing long pants too!!! Besides how else am I going to work on my tan! :o)

If you are barefoot it is socially acceptable by most growers to wear shorts in a pumpkin patch.Although do not plan on attending other functions afterwards.People will ask whats up with your cat.
Never is it accectable to wear slacks....you may wear jeans or overalls..slacks are for city slickers who have never smelled manure or grown anything except a house plant.
It is also never fashionable to wear white, bright colors will attract bees, along with any flu-flu juice you may have sprayed on your self to attract a mate.

Now longsleeves are a required when harvesting jack o lanterns in the fall. Pickers never make that mistake twice.

With your shorts you have to wear your hooker heels, it is great for aeration

I ended up getting the lightest weight chambray (lt. blue) pants that I could find on sale. At least I don't get scratched as much. There are too many dry weeds to wear sandals. It seldom rains in CA in the summer.

Shorts - real men aren't afraid of scratches. Regular boating atire. Sandals are fine but never with socks. It poured BUCKETS while I was trying to measure tonight. A bathing suit would have been ideal but like a fool, I had already changed into Columbia GPS shorts. Grrr.

Erin, great question! I agree with Steve about the boating atire. Typically I will wear a life vest though especially when I am watering. If for some reason I cannot locate my vest I have inflatable rubber ducky as a back up. G string, sandals, "Fritz The Night Owl" sunglasses, life vest... Yea baby! Of course I am just joking. Blue jeans, t-shirt, muddy tennis shoes, "Fritz The Night Owl" sunglasses. To heck with the shorts, get the glasses as they are sign of great strength and will entertain the neighbors daily. :-)

Real men don't know what chambray is much less actually use the word in a sentence. Slacks is a gay word for pants and that isn't a word we use in the patch either.(most of us).
Shorts unless you're spraying harsh chemicals...our leg hair keeps the prickly leaves a good inch from the skin....

I have all the peanuts characters outfits, I usually ware a different costume everytime I water, and then I hum or whistle that piano tune (charlie brown/peanuts theme) schroeder always plays when I'm watering.

Shorts and flip flops here Erin....anything heavier and I would die of heat stroke! LOL....bare foot would be nice, but after all, we have those crazy fire ants here (not to mention several varieties of poisonous snakes! YUCK!) I do get comments on the scratches on occasion, but who to impress???

I agree with the "No socks with sandals" but do have to add that it is not good to wear colored socks with shorts. I am not sure about the naked one. We have cows close by and the horseflies are terrible. Last I need is another itchy welt someplace that usually is covered. Rumor has it that Ron Wallace wears some sort of Space-aged rubber pants as not to harm the leaves when traversing the patch. Keepiing out as much as possible is probably a better idea.

The best attire has to be T-shirt, shorts, 12" LaCrosse Guardsman boots, and a wrist watch. This allows for the all time classic in farmer's tans.
