Pete,
From my perspective, blossum rot is when the blossum end gets soft and turns brown. When that happens, your pumpkin is done! Been there....done that!

feel it...is it soft and mushy? if so, then its rotting, but its not too late. ive saved a couple of pumpkins by scraping away the bad stuff, lightly dusting with sulphur and gettng a fan on it

it's not soft, just dark in color.

Pete,
I could be wrong, but it looks like if you gently tried to wiggle the blossom "knob", it might feel loose, like a loose tooth. It just doesn't appear to have a solid connection to the pumpkin. If it is loose, you could have rot underneath it, into the pumpkin flesh. I hope not, though.

We had a pumpkin with the blossom knob going soft & brown last year @ Aug 1st. We cut the knob off the blossom end flush with the pumpkin & put some benomyl on it & kept it dry. The pumpkin continued to grow the remainder of the season & finished at 957#. Thanks goes out to Jerry Rose & a couple other growers for their great advice. Don't give up on it too early.

thanks guys-

I cut it flush with the pumpkin (thanks for the picture Andy). It looked nice and fresh at the cut, so I'm hoping for the best.
