I have been looking for an answer for this through some of the posts. How much does the vegitation from the pumpkin to the tip of the main add to growth? I know it is good to have but any guesses trying to quantify? Animals keep eating my leaves ahead of the fruit and I cannot use a shotgun in the neighborhood. I am trying a hot Cayenne pepper (120 index) tea party.

I think you will get a lot of varying opinions on this. The general thinking is that vines behind the fruit contribute the majority of the nutrients.

Try using a BB gun, if you can get close enough to hit them. Thant should scare them away without harming them.

Rob,

There are plenty of decent animal repellents.

The fruit will be back-fed to a degree that is governed by how productive the rest of the plant is. If you ever lose the main the front end will "sense" the change & become more productive. To what degree? I suppose it depends on the conditions. I believe no one has ever established a means to quantify this.
