How the heck do you keep the main vine in the ground when you bury it. It just keeps popping out of the ground and i put lots of soil over it? Suggestions?

use stakes or a bent hanger.

I cover it with dirt then put a brick over it. As the vine grows, I just keep moving the brick down the new growth.

Tremor, I'm glad you said that. I had been thinking about burying only secondaries next year. Didn't know if it was a good way to go or not.

Strange how it pushes it self out of the ground and I do use hangers too.....Guess it dont like being covered up.

Thanks for the info, I have been putting more dirt on and putting a large rock over it to keep it down and anchored it with bamboo sticks so I'll keep at it.

I only bury secondaries I like to keep a eye on the main plus sometimes due the pumpkins position you might have to move it. Im glad I did I soft a soft spoy on my main about two feet from where the pumpkin was set. I painted it with daconil and it healed right up. Now if it was covered I probally wouldnt have noticed it and wondered all season why the heck my fruit wasnt growing.

We also don't bury the main vine before the pumpkin. We let the main continue growing past the pumpkin and will bury it once it has been turned and is away from the pumpkin about 6 feet beyond. We trench before the secondaries and then push the dirt over them. This works for us rather than having to find dirt to cover the vine. Sherry

Are you interested in promoting the tap roots on the main? Seems like it's a plus to partially bury the main at the leaf nodes.

Id say it wouldnt hurt to bury the main by the nodes but you would have to start early on. I was thinking about doing that but its too late now.

Bury Main Pros: More node root function, better wind resistance, less bug attack or animal bites....
Bury Main Cons: Can't watch the condition of the vine, rot increases, if SVB got in before you buried it sucks, if SVB went in through stalk and dropped in and chewed into main it sucks, takes more to pull out when stem stress comes and you're more likely to bust it pulling it up...
post your own pros and cons if ya think of more...

Bury just node = same rooting
Buried Main = Fusarium Buried Main = more difficult to raise the vine Bruied Main = more work for old backs
Unburied = more insecticide (like we don't already spray?)

When I bury the entire vine I get a node from the bottom and the top of the vine. All the vines left out send down one.
