Subject: Androgenous male/female flower

For the pumpkin botanists: I was pruning what I thought were a couple of male flowers. There was a slight orange ball beneath. I opened the flower and it appears to be a five lobe female with the stamen from the male almost (for lack of better terminology) welded on top of the five lobes. I'm assuming these are mutations of sorts but I cut two off of the same plant. Is this an unusual event?

That sounds like what my Hubbard squash flowers look like. Could it be possible that the seed was an open pollination and another plant (Hubbard squash) was the father?

i had one this year too, looked like a pumpkin lolipop, cool looking but mutant. these seem to be popping up in more patches all the time.

None yet this year but we did have one with seeds in the segements (blossom). Prime spot too.

i found 2 today on my 1005 miller. 1 opened today (a 3 lober), the other will on wednesday. Kinda cool, long stem just like a male. Looked just like the picts in the above diary's.
