Thanks, but my pumpkins with smaller seeds don't get as big and I do what is needed to grow a giant pumpkin!

maybe its just coincidence. there's no proven evidence that seed size has anything to do wtih ultimate pumpkin size when disucssing the AG

The smallest Atlantic Giant seed that I have is from a Handy 810 pumpkin. They are really small. I'm going to plant one this year as it produced a 1000+ pounder in New England last year.

list, tried len's seed starting alternative to sanding seed edges. inadvertently let seed soak overnite, as opposed to just a couple hours, and in two days had a 1/4" sprout happenin'. placed seed horizontal in peat pot last nite.
waiting to see if that husk is shuck upon emergence !?!!
seeing is believin'

Okay, I was just wondering. I used a seed from a 827lbs pumpkin. It's already sprouted. I was just testing, I am aware it's still too early. Thanks--Grant

Grant;
You don't have to kill that plant! You only have to keep it indoors 8 more weeks...I know just the method to do just that if you are interested! "A seed is a terrible thing to waste"

I would be interested as well in finding out how to keep my plant alive for 8 more weeks. I too started my seeds in peat pots as a test and they're getting big. I don't want to kill 'em. Thanks for any input

Yeah, alot of people started there test seeds and like all, we don't want to kill em. So my oppinion is that you go to the nearest Garden Store and get a small inexpensive greenhouse. But just remember, it is still too early to try a Giant Pumpkin. Thanx madman 4 that advice!

Advice to all who already started a seed: Get rid of it unless you live in Florida or Southern California. By May these large pots will be so root bound that the plant will never do as good as a plant started and transplanted before they have many roots around the edge if the pots. I trans plant mine to their field positions 2 to 3 days after they emerge and some roots are already out 4 inches. I think its important that those first roots travel out as intended instead of growing around the edge of the pot. You spend many hours caring for a plant. Don't waste your time on a plant started in Febuary, unless you are going to root a runner in April and plant that "clone". See "Cloning" by Madman.

Addendum to above message: I received an E-mail asking if it would be Okay to keep a plant if it was in a very large container, like 18 inch diameter. My opinion is "NO". In 2 months the runners of my plants are out 15 to 18 feet and the roots are just as far out in all direstions. In that 18 inch pot, your roots are going to be out 9 inches out in early May and you plant will never have a normal root system. Madman Mark said "a seed is a terrible thing to waste". Time spent on a plant already started is also a terrible thing to waste. In October, lets here how big your pumpkin is from the seeds you already started.
