i have not set a pumpkin yet, should i go for the main anyway, or the larger secondary?

Do both and then choose once they are growing.

As a rule, the pumpkin on the secondary vine will grow faster than the one on the main vine through most of July. However, the one on the main vine usually(99%) outgrows the one on the secondary. Secondary pumpkins often get to 500 lbs.
