What are thoughts of letting a secondary grow at the node where the pumpkin is growing?
Should I cut if off, or encourage it?

Once you're sure the fruit is set cut the secondary off as well as the leaf at the same node. Leaving "stuff" there will make getting good vine/stem position very difficult.

Jeremy, The node is the junction point at which the leaves stem and the male or female grow from.

I agree with Gary, I learned that trick this year and it sure does allow your female to grow out at a better vine angle naturally.

Done. The pumpkin is now growing free of leaves and secondaries. Give that baby some room to breathe. Thanks!
