Past seasons my pumpkins ( and squash) have started out shaped like basketballs, this year they look like footballs..nice even shape, just footballs. Does anyone have a preference, does football shape tend to grow longer shaped pumpkins?
Thanks....Paul

I prefer round or barrel shaped pumpkins. I think footballs will tend to be longer than round shapes, but you can't always tell. It depends on how they fill out.

I guess I like the big barrel shaped ones with a bit of length to them, than the wheel shaped pumpkins. My experience has been that when they start out as really round little pumpkins, they have a good chance to end up as a big wheel.

Thinking that longer football pumpkins will be more likely to get pockets in the ribs and hold water or fall to a growth ring crack. I do believe that it is a geometric rule that a true circle is the strongest, and any deviation to that will be weaker. Keeping with the roundest fruit possible is my goal this year.

Footballs usually win the weighoffs.

Footballs rule. Look at the 1068 progeny for that Wallace winning figure.

Take a look at the current & all the former WR's. Long tails on all but the worst of them.

Basketballs are for the front porch. Footballs are for the scales.

Grow 'em long.

Thanks guys, the footballs are on my 670 Daigle ( it's in my diary), I was checking on the AGGC & most of the larger 670 offspring ( except for the 1233 Reiss) had huge circumference's meaning they were long pumpkins. I'm picking between 2 on the 670 & my choice will be growth rate 2nd, my first priority is taking the "fullest" football shaped pumpkin. Try to avoid the one with future dip problems.
And Steve, I crossed the 670 with the 1133 Demers, same cross as the 1068..so I guess the offspring next season should be bright orange footballs..LOL
