From 2002 - today there are 470 pumpkins reported at AGGC over 1000 lbs. Of those reporting, here are the ones grown LESS than 10' out on the main.

I pollinated one at 4 feet on the 9th not sure if it will take or if I will keep it it was pollinated with only 1 male also.

I think a lot of those are because they "can" go further than 10 feet out. That is, they're going to pick one to grow and for most people the sweet spot seems to be 10 to 15 feet out.
Year after year, I find that I can do 9 feet out in the first week of July, or 11 or 12 in the second week... seemed to be just my lot in life... until my neighbor now has easily surpassed anything I've ever tried to do. At any rate, mine are about 9 if I take the first or 11 if I take the second. My best is only a little less than 600 though.
