Every year as pumpkin growers select their seeds and ready their garden, almost all direct their thoughts toward growing at least one pumpkin weighing over 1000 pounds. The majority of growers each year do not attain that mark. If they do it could be a once in a lifetime accomplishment. Most growers don’t have the space needed to grow more than two or three plants. If they do, they may lack the time required to grow a monster. The half-ton mark is not easy to attain, especially for those with only a few plants and not a lot of time.
Those growers able to grow a 1000 pound pumpkin should get more recognition, something lasting longer, than their few seconds on the scales. With this in mind, the Pennsylvania growers have decided to establish the “Half-Ton Pumpkin Club.” Membership is automatic for any grower who grows or has grown a pumpkin officially weighed at or above 1000 pounds dating back to Paula Zehr and her 1061.
As a beginning, a readily displayable Half-Ton Pumpkin Club patch has been designed and will soon be made available at cost to the various pumpkin growing clubs and individual growers as well. These patches are of the iron-on variety and can be placed with pride on your shirt, jacket or hat and will call attention to your accomplishment. They measure 3.5 inches across, are bright orange for visibility and will sell for cost, around $2.00 each.
What say you growers? Should not those who have grown 1000 pounds or more be given a bit more recognition? This takes nothing away from growers able to far exceed the 1000 pound mark but does give some recognition to the “little guy.”
Take a look at the patch on the site below and place your thoughts here on BigPumpkins.

Patches may be ordered by contacting the Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Growers via Marv Meisner at a cost of $2.00 per patch. Clubs and individuals can order to have patches available for presentation at the upcoming weighoffs or for members who have achieved 1000 pounds. Individuals who have grown a 1000 pound or more pumpkin can also order. Send request and check or money order to:

We want to get this going and so we are selling patches at a little below cost. If we had ordered more the cost would have been even less. Just send $2 per patch and I will send you as many as you need. A check is fine. Also, this is not about making a big profit and getting rich. These patches are the iron on type and so can be used almost anywhere you like. Well, almost anywhere.
