Has anyone been successful in using frozen males from the previous year? What is the trick to using them? When they thaw out they whilt.

I tried saving it by scraping the pollen into a small vial and adding a desiccant pack. the following year, the pollen looked good, nice and powdery, but it was no good. I went 0 for 10 on pollinations with it.
I've heard of using liquid nitrogen, but supposedly that was only about a 50/50 shot.
