It was closed but swolen at 2PM. An hour later one petal was splittiung away from the rest. By 3:30 half the petals were open.

I'm used to seeing the girls open up in the morning.

I've never seen this before. Has anyone else?

Steve,
We pollinated a pumpkin this year that didn't start opening until 11am. Very unusual for us as well. The plant was in an area that got later sun and we thought that might have been the reason.

I've had a PM opener too, as has my neighbor Chris. we humped em in the PM, and again in the AM the following morning. both sets took, but i certainly dont have an idea why!

Steve, I've had the same problem this year with my 1068. Keeps fooling me! I've pollinated them in the afternoon and in the morning after like Joe and had them take so far. Very frustrating though.

Steve, water? I've had the same happen after a hot day with a cool front and showers in the early afternoon. I think it is a temp thing? Not sure, but had a happen last weekend here. Just when I thought I was done chasing girls all day and night, don't tell Ma punk I said that! What fun.

John,

Full sun all day.

So I'm not crazy. The pumpers are just trying to make us that way. I'll pollinate it again tomorrow.

I'd blame GWB but it's probably dark energy, sun spots & Glenn.

first available pollination on that plant
on June 30th. i did not water that plant that day
because i did not want to get that female wet because
it was looking like it would open the next morning.

when i went to put the mesh baggie on it that evening,
DANG! this one's already opened and closed (!).
bagged anyway, and did not open the next morning.
twist, tossed. no OPEN pollinations for me!
and, the one i poll'd this morning, 7-6-07
on a side vine>>>>>>>>>>>>>barely open at all at 9:40 am.
rip, tear, pollinate, re-bag. we'll see what happens---eric

I actually bagged mine in the evening...did not pollinate. It did take though in the AM. Mine was BARELY open in the PM, but was open slightly.
