Hi everyone, I have two AG plants and I would like to use Bayer Advanced 12 month Tree and Shrub insect control (merit)on them. (Imadacloprid 1.47%) I heard that some growers on here have good results with it. I bought the liquid form, figuring it would work faster than the granules. Basically, how much would I add per gallon of water? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Scout, go to top right of this board, and type conversion into the site search box, then click on GO...sixth down on the list gives a very precise rate for a lot of the Imadacloprid products. Hope this helps. Lots of excellent info can be found using the "Site Search" function. This site can do it all!!!!!!!!! BP.com rocks Peace, Wayne

I just discussed this over 4th of July celebrations - with both my Aunt (a chemist/gardener) and my mother's friend (a 'master gardener')... Since I'd purchased a quart of this concentrate - hoping to save money..
Both agreed to dilute it with water on a 1:1 basis. Since it's water soluble, this is not hard to do... I refill my hose-end Bayer/merit applicator sprayer with the concentrate (diluted to same % amount that the 'normal' lawn/garden Bayer is applied at).. Since the hose-end applicator is already set on the proper amount - makes it easier...
BTW - one thing that came up in the conversation, is that Merit is one of the pesticides with the LEAST toxicity to humans.... just thought you'd like to know.

Thanks for the info so far everyone. Scienceteacher- can I mix it 1:1 with water in a small container and apply it? Or is it best to buy that sprayer? I would like to just mix it up and put it on...... how do I apply it? let it soak in just the root zone, or soak the leafs to? Thanks again.

madscout,
This is from a post I made a few years ago. Check the percent Imidacloprid before using this data.
____________________________begin clip_____________________
All Imidacloprid formulations are produced using technical grade Imidacloprid that is manufactured by Bayer CropScience. The asterisk* denotes a version not labeled for use on cucumber, squash, pumpkin, etc. But pumpkins can't read. All rates are calculated per acre first. Then I'll divide by 43.56 for the rate per 1000 square feet.
It is best to apply Imidacloprid a week or two prior to planting out in at least 2 gallons of water per 1000 square feet then water it in slowly without puddling. This will control Cucumber Beetles, SVB, & Aphids for about 90 days.
Then repeat the same drench application also watering in at 90 days to cover the rest of the season.
First the Flowable liquid formulations:
Bayer Tree & Shrub*........1.47% Imidacloprid 233-350oz/acre Bayer Merit 2F*...........21.40% Imidacloprid 16-24oz/acre Bayer Admire 2F...........21.40% Imidacloprid 16-24oz/acre Bayer Provado 1.6F*.......17.40% Imidacloprid 20-30oz/acre
Now the various Wettable Powder formulations:
Merit 75WP*...............75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre Merit 75WSP*..............75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre Provado Solupak*..........75.00% Imidacloprid 6.4-8.6 oz/acre
So........
Bayer T&S.....................5.35-8 oz per 1000 square feet Merit 2F...................10.3-15.4 ml per 1000 square feet Admire 2F..................10.3-15.4 ml per 1000 square feet Provado 1.6F...............12.8-19.3 ml per 1000 square feet Merit 75WP & 75WSP..3-4 level teaspoons per 1000 square feet Provado Solupak.....3-4 level teaspoons per 1000 square feet
There are also 4 different granular formulations that are also not labeled for cucumbers.
Steve

Bayer Tree & Shrub*........1.47% Imidacloprid 233-350oz/acre
So if the high rate is what you're after (correct) take 350 oz divided by 43.56 = 8 oz per 1000 sq ft.
So add 8 oz Bayer T&S to 1 or 2 gallons of water, spray the entire 1000sf area as evenly as possible. Then water it in without letting it dry. Spray the soil, plants, everything.
If you're treating more or less area, adjust the amount accordingly.

I want to run Merit threw my drip, I'm watering 4400 sq feet so would I take 4.4 X 3 or 4 teaspoons that would give me 13 to 17 teaspoons. Mix it in my 300 gallon tank and water in ?

Quinn, Looks to me from the above info you would use a quart of the 1.47% for the area you mention...

Quinn,
If you have the 75W you'd use 9/10 oz on 4400 sf. The rate for teaspoons is 4 level tsp/1000.
So yeah...17.6 level teaspoons per 4400 sf. The volume of water used to deliver 17 teaspoons doesn't matter since we're watering it in over a 1-2 week period. Personally I wouldn't change the irrigation cycles at all. If the soil stays moist enough to prevent water stress, then the Merit will do it's job.

Steve I'm not sure I understand the 1-2 week period. I have three 300 gallon tanks , right know I'm putting on two tanks of water every day or every other day and will bump that up after I add some more length to my dripp line two all three tanks real soon. My plan is to put the 17.6 teaspoons in one of the 300 gallon tanks water it in and put the other 300 gallons on right after that, would that be all right to do it that way ?

I use the hose end sprayer: Bayer Advanced Lawn - Complete Insect Killer... it's .72% Imidacloprid.... So if you put the 1.47% Tree and shrub in the same empty sprayer on a 1:1 dilution with water - you will get close to the same % as the complete Insect Killer dilution. Bayer has already set the hose end sprayer to proper dilution rate for a lawn...
I've been spraying this as a 'light' foliar spray - 2-3X per month. Laying down granular merit in front of vine growth... So far no ill-effects have been noted with the pumkins and squash - though everything munching on them has paid dearly...
With the emergence of the front troops of my normal SVB INVASION force - I should know within another 2-3 weeks if this heavy application rate of two types of merit is effctive... The non-Merit-protected Zuccinis have already lost their battles!

Ok I am now confused. I purchased the Bayer Advanced. I only have a 25 by 10 area for the pumpkins. So, that would be 1.34 to 2oz for my 250 sq feet?
Since I might have some SVB in the leaf stems should I pour it directly on the vines to kill any possible active borers?
I have already sprayed ortho max on the leaves and stems.
Thanks
