In Ks I would keep something over the pumpkin even when its very young, espeacialy if the leaves are not alighned right and the July sun can BEAT on it. Make a small cover out of 1/2" insulation maybe 18" square or so and prop it up over it. you can easily move this from young pumpkin to young pumpkin as you either cull them or make more substantial shade for possible keepers.

put a t-shirt over the young fruit and switch to a sheet laid over the fruit during the rest of growth cycle

once the fruit is over 300 pounds cover the fruit with a blanket at night when temp is below 65 degrees, plastic tarp pver blanket if its raining or especially cold

during september and any really cool days id also leave the pumpkin exposed to the sun. especially in september/ blanket at night- expose to sun during the day
(this helps keep the fruit at an even temp and can reduced stalling and startup each day

Also, a cover when the pumpkins are young, could prevent critters from chomping on it. You may want to try and keep the young pumpkin(and as it grows) dry, to prevent blossom end problems, etc.

So basically we should tuck it in each night, kiss on top, and then uncover it in the morning. Dress it in a t-shirt if it's hot, a rain jacket if its rainy.....

I'll just have to assume the even temp really makes a difference.....

white plastic lawn chairs do the trick nicely when pumpkins are small for both sun and rain protection.
