Subject: covering up roots

I had to get in to the plant a bit to get to the males.. and saw roots at the surface should i cove these up, with some dirt?

I wouldn't. Sometimes they come up for air. They should be fine.

when i have extra dirt, i cover them up. i figure if they want air, they'll have to grow more, thereby making more roots.

If they are roots from the leaf nodes, I agree with Andy and Pap. I've done the same in this case.
