If one wants to set a fruit on a secondary, for best results, what should one look for, first second secondary? 8-9 feet out on that one. If I was to run an insurance pumpkin where would you want to put it to least affect the downstream pumpkin if possible? I have heard 1000 ders can be grown on secondaries what is ideal for secondaries?

Like a conventional set, I'd say that you want as much plant behind the fruit as possible. So the end of a secondary that is furthest our on the main possible would seem logical...but I've only grown 2 pumpers on secondaries & neither did very well so...

if you want a backup pumpkin on a secondary id suggest POLLINATING ONE ON A SIDE AFTER THE MAIN VINE PUMPKIN

THAT WAY YOU DONT TAKE AWAY FROM THE MAIN VINE PUMPKINS GROWTH AND WHATEVER GETS PAST THE MAIN VINE PUMPKIN CAN BELONG TO THAT BACK UP FRUIT

Earlier does not necessarily mean bigger or better, It is all in the soil and technique......Remember I have many years of experience of Colorado growing behind my belt. This actually seems like a great year for all growers here 60 miles south of you wiz, except for the 10 plus hail storms we have had, and a near miss tornado. But that is what protection and innovation are for.....Happy Growing

If we want to get most of our secondaries grown out to 12' and terminated with a main vine of 14'and by the magic window date of July 5th, I should of had mine in the ground with hoops 5 days earlier, or April 15th so next year I will make the adjustments.
