They say good measurement is 25 inches cc on day 10. Mine measured 24 inches on day 10.

The new ailts-landry says 27" (1400+ I think) but thats big. Al Eaton says 20". So 20-27 is good. One of my early pollinations is 24 on day 10, so thats exciting.

I just measured 26.5" on my 670 @ 10 days. I don't get too excited until day 30

Vader, the Ailts/Landry Benchmark Study is available at gvgo.ca the 27" at day 10 is for a 1200#er...according to the study, 21.7" on day 10 (avg) ends up being 800-899 lbs. Hope this helps. Peace, Wayne

Okay, lets talk measuring Circumference. Who includes the blossom end to try and cheat an extra 2 or three inches? At this early stage, the blossom end does not count! (nor at the latter stages does it!)

Rocky you are correct do not use the blossom area. Also whether you measure in the morning or evening of the tenth day will make several inches difference. I use it in fruit slection and like to see around 25. Last year my 1103 measured 21 on day ten. But the 20 and 30 days measurements are much more meaningful.

I measured the pumpkin on my first pollination of the season this morning. This morning was day 10. It only measured 19". We will have two more at day 10 tomorrow and they also look to be similar. We hade very hot conditions last week with severe wilting occuring on two days and it has been very cold here the last few nights with temps doen into the 40's. I suspect that these extream conditions have slowed the fruit developement. Last year our fruit all measured 24"-31" on day 10, with our largest pumpkin at 23" on day 10.
I guess the question is, do we keep these fruit or cull them in lue of later pollinations? With conditions varying so much, can you really compare 10 day measurements between fruit on the same plant?

Alas, i'm guilty of including the 'belly button' in my measuring:( it just seems like the right thing to do when dealing with these monsters...if i had i dinasaur in my backyard he'd be measured from the tip of his scaly tail to the outermost wort on his nose;) Granted, my day 50 and 60 measurements will pale compared to most, but for right now, i'll take every inch this galloping globe will give me;) For the record, i'm @ 34.5" at day 10 (and 33" flat without the wort;)
Happy growing.

I would be more concerned with the size of your plants and the location from the crown of your sets. These relationships are just as important when deciding which fruit to keep.
I just checked the data file and found that the smallest fruit ever to reach 1,000 was 19" on day 10. It can be done with fruit of this size it depends upon your conditions.
Benchmark > a standard by which something is evaluated or measured. To measure the performance of an item relative to another similar item in an impartial scientific manner. The Ailts/Landry Benchmark Study is a tool of comparison and averages. Relating it to your own historical records with regards to plant size, weather, fruit location and other factors can help you to make the culling decisions easier.

I had one in the past that was 23" on day 10 and ended up being 1114. My biggest day 10 measurement ever was 33" and ended up at only 781. I dont get to excited about day 10 at all. I agree with Bill, day 20 and 30 are much better indicaters of whats to come.
