Last night the temps went down to 52 deg here in Ct and my main vine snapped on one of my plants. Should have known how vines react to cool weather....can't change it now! I'm re-training a secondary as the main. Does a re-trained secondary perform as well as the original main? I'm curious to here what feedback this gets?

Last year I had a flatvine problem with one plant, so I trained a secondary as the main(3-4 ft. from the crown). After it got going, it looked like a normal plant/normal main. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a pumpkin set on the plant, which may have been due to hot summer temps.

worked well for me last year, except the pumpkin split. it would have been decent, not sure how it would have compared to a normal main.
i did it again this year (different circumstances), and so far the plant is doing about as well as a main.

A re-trained secondary my look the same as a main, but do they produce big fruit. Anyone know of BIG pumpkins grown this way. My 500 Northrup has a secondary trained as a main about 11' out from the crown.
