This evening my youngest daughter was in the patch with me and we were pulling weeds..she says, we need to leave some of these weeds for the twisters to twist around..At the moment I cannot think what the correct name for the pumpkin vine twisters are but you know what i'm talking about..so what do you think,,should we leave a few weeds for the pumpkin to hold on to? After all that's what their there for..I have seem many times after a storm my whole plant laying on its side after being blown over...maybe if there were a few weeds there for it to grab onto...who knows?? thanks!!

Twisters are also called tendrils. I bury my vines, and take most of the tendrils off. When the vines put down roots, under each leafnode, it will help keep your vines anchored. Some people leave the tendrils on, and bury these as well, to get some extra, early anchorage. Sounds like your daughter's quite bright. I imagine what your daughter suggested, is the main reason for the plant having "twisters". You gotta love children!

Blkcloud...once I think we can't learn anything from this younger generation, you go and drop this on us. Wow!!!....Forgot what it was like to be a kid! A 50lb pumpkin is MONSTER to them. For all of us who grow, if you think it isn't big, wait till you see it in a child's eyes!! Let's give all the kids something to remember this October....... :)

My 5 & 6 year old are growing there own this year, they each have 2 pumpkin plants, right now my 5 year old's pumpkin's are growing the best. It's there responsibility when we go to grandpa's to water there plants, they are learning responsibility and they should be excited when pumpkins start growing.

Tendrils can be quite the pain in the butt. If you leave them, and I know this from personal experience, they can grab onto a mesh fence, other vines, etc and if the vine keeps growing the tendrils holding it back can cause the vine to bend and crack. Best to keep on top of them, and remove them. I take off about a handful every morning.
