will moth balls kill my pumpkin plants if i scatter them in the patch i seen a copperhead snake about a foot long and was looking for a deterent for him and field mice

That copperhead IS your deterrent for field mice.
I use mothballs to deter deer and have noted no ill effects. However, I place them at the perimeter of the vine.

we have used moth balls for years to keep mice away. around mid to late august we not only bank sand around the pumpkin bur put a ring or two of moth balls as well

If you want to get rid of mice or nuisance chipmunks use a 5 gallons pail half filled with water and then put 1 inch of sunflower seeds and ramp a board up to it, this is highly effective.

Sticky traps work good for mice and snakes, You can buy the sticky substance in the gallon and make your own traps. Just maybe put them in a box or some enclosure to keep the rain and dust off them.
