I've had such varied luck in the past I don't know what to compare this years plants to, maybe someone can help me out with this. My plants are about 12 inches high with vines that average 24 inches long. I think the rainy spring has done me right this year but I'm not sure where the plants should be at this point.

your plants are quite small. if a one week old plant is put in the groung on or around may 1st to the 5th, then at this point in the season the plants main vine should be a minimum of 8 to ten ft long, with a minimum of 7 or 8 side vines ( each side of main )starting at 10 ft out from the stump and graduated down to a couple ft at the 8 ft (or so ) tip of main. prime pollination time is anytime between now and around the 7th of july.

True, with your shorter season they do have a shorter period for pollination. Here in the South - we can still get decent sized 'kins with pollination as late as August 15th..
While most of my plants are now covering 10X10' - I have a couple around the size of yours. I'm not terribly worried, since my growing season is at least 6 weeks longer than yours.
You just need some high temps and sun, and your plants should 'explode' with growth. But don't fret, maybe you'll have a late frost this year.
Next year, try 'northern grown' seedstock.

MIne are small also, I think they smoke ciggarettes when I'm not looking, stunted growth, I have a few that are smaller, all I can think of is they were filed down to where you can see the inside of the seed? maybe to much manure or compost?

My plants are a little behind what Id like them to be. They look great though and growing good but only about 5 to 6 feet out. Im not too worried because we have a preety late season and I should be able to polinate about the fourth of July which works out ok. Good luck

you can still grow a big pumpkin, probably not bigger than pap, but still nice by most standards. I also got a late start due to the death of both plants i started, but if all goes well I dont see a problem getting 7-800lbs

Thank guys, the plants look nice and healthy and the leave are green and whole. I guess it's just the way they're going to grow this year. As long as I get something to give out to the kids this year I guess we'll be ok.
