- Mulch. Weeds won't thrive and seeds won't sprout without the help of sunshine. Make sure they stay in the dark by smothering them with a thick layer of mulch. You can buy all manner of prepared stuff in bags or in bulk. In my garden, I've had good success with multiple Advertisement layers of newspaper covered with about three inches of decorative bark mulch (see previous post, "Dances with Newspaper and Mulch."). Cardboard also works well. Other types of mulch to consider: hay, pine needles, wood chips, compost, cocoa bean hulls, dried lawn clippings, sawdust.
- Fire. Do you have one of those little butane torches for carmelizing the tops of creme brulee? They're effective at torching weeds, too. Just pass the flame over the weed and the heat will cause the weed's cell walls to explode. Propane cannisters like those used on camp stoves also can be fitted with weed-torching wants (Google "propane weed torch"). Safety tip: don't use around dried brush!
