Is there normally a delay in growth on the fruit left on the main, after culling a larger one. I culled one at 11' about 5 days ago, letting one grow at 14', it has slowed down in growth, and I am gettin nervous. Is there a normal delay in the plant finding the new "sink" to pump the energy to? All responses appreciated!!! Peace, Wayne

Sorry Wayne, not that I've heard of so far. If anything the other fruit should grow faster.

I have had aborts shortly after I have culled, Im not sure if it was a result of the cull or not.

I have read here in the past that any cull should be done gradually. Cut only half way through the stem of a cull and then cut the rest of the way through the next day. The reason given was that throwing everything that was going into the cull into the keeper at one time will cause aborts. I had the same happen last year before I read that info.

Thanks, all, and got small growth today, keeping fingers crossed. Mark, the cull of pkn #1 was done over a 4 day period, so I think I did that properly. Peace, Wayne

we wait and cull only after fruit in question/questions have had ample time to grow a bit
.
our first pollination is only made after a minimum of 12 ft main so that this pollination and any there after are far enough out to keep.
should pumpkin # 1 have a good angle/shape and stem length plus grows bigger that #2 or #3 then after a week #1 stays and #2 and #3 take a hike ( one each on a different day )

likewise if either #2 or # 3 has a better angle/shape/stem length and keeps up or starts to pass # 1 then #1 gets the boot.

hope this helps everyone

Thanks pap, I'm sorta guessin that I waited too long to make the decision....#1 was 11' out and #2 was 14 feet out...but I did not cull till after 2 weeks, should get off the pot and make a decision a little earlier, eh??? Thanks again for all of your continued support, to all of us!!! Peace, Wayne
PS...#2 was better angle, and growing faster, and was larger at day 10, than #1...that is what prompted my decision.
