I have two questions concerning pollinations.
1. I know most people here say they pollinate a female with 2 or 3 males. Is one male sufficient if thats all you have ready at the time?
2. Should most of the pollen be concentrated on the lobes or in the center of the female? Does it make a lot of difference?
Thanks

I use 6 so I can be sure. If you got proper coverage one would be enough. I try to cover all parts of the female with pollen.

We need to consider what you are trying to accomplish. Just a few grains of Pollen are needed for the pollination process. If you want seeds in the fall you want as many ovules fertilized as possible. It also gives you a more uniform pumpkin if all the lobes are pollinated. One Male should give you more than plenty if applied to all lobes.

Using more males will increase the chances if a successful pollination and we want to take all steps we can to get those main vine flowers pollinated. If you only have one, use it wisely and cross your fingers, if you have more available use them. I find any more than three, you just start to smear around the pollen.

I read that you should pollinate well around the inside--center of the segments(lobes).

Mark its best not to pollinate until early July around the 5-7th.the reason so i can catch up with you hehehehehe.
I use more than one male if i have more than one ready to go. like Shannon said one is plenty.

YOu delicately remove the petals from the male bloom and take the stigma--and dab it a few times on the female stigma. Carefull not to shake your pollen off the male while in transit to the female.
