I have noticed that at the site of every new female there is also a new leaf and usually a tendril forming at the same time. I pruned the leaf and tendril away from one female and it really seemed to let the female grow out at perfect angle away from the vine. The ones I did not prune seems to be forced into an angle more parallel to the vine. Does anyone else do this? Should I leave the tendrils and new leaves alone?

Took a look at the picture in your diary Mark. Looks like sunburn to me. Young leaves tend to do that if stuck in (hot) direct sunlight for too long.
