Yo dawgs !! I posted a message back awhile ago about wind protection and after the last couple of days here in Littleton, Colorado( and across the whole State) of almost hurricane gust winds I have to thank you all for all your help and ideas ! The plants all small right now and easy enough to protect but after sitting in my truck ,at the patch, and watching the wind swirl from every direction for quite awhile, all your ideas came into fruition. The Wiz wasn't very lucky as I'm sure you'll hear....very sad.. and as a rookie, I feel very lucky to still be standing . I do admit..part of the fun here is outsmarting Mother Nature and overcoming her wrath. Good Luck to ALL and please everybody careful of the lightning out there !!!!!! The Biz........diary to start up soon .

It is currently 28 degrees. The low an hour ago was 27.3 degrees. Just as you Colorado guys, we've had two days of constant 35 to 60 MPH winds. The wind broke 3' off the end of one of my main vines. I'm too scared to look under the tarps this morning to see if the rest of the plants are frozen solid.

Oh well more challenges to over come, it aint lost yet but my prize Wallace broke in 2/3 rds. It was in a protected area against the house but a micor burst must of come in as several branches were down on trees too. Leaves everywhere, and this was at the home patches....1502 laying over. It was such a nice plant too. I put on 3 splints so the stem cant move now and we will see if it heals. If not I plan on cutting it off, letting it harden off, dipping it in root hormones and replanting it in super soil. Im thinking it will re root and set me back three weeks. I cant give up on it....Im still upset...
35 degrees this AM. this weather $ucks... I have always like the Seattle SeaHawks.....Hows their base ball team?

Looks like Capt didn't fair any better than the rest of ya all. A couple branches landed on the tomatoe cages. The wind damaged my Elephant Garlic, (this will hurt the final weight of the bulbs.)

My 1173 Macari survived the hurricane. Had her covered up
with a large plastic bucket with a brick on top. Not real
sophisticated wind protection but after two days in the dark she looks great this morning. Now if the hail misses
us this afternoon we will start all over tomorrow.....LB

I just heard on the radio where Colorado was leveled in some really damaging hail along with your state Beet, Wy.
The was interviewing people about their car windshields and sun roofs being shattered into a ka-zillion pieces. Sorry about your bad luck guys, I hope she just stays out of Ohio, they are calling for hail in some parts of Ohio today though.

Even had some frost damage on Joes community patch, in town, with a possible loss on one. Unbelievable, This is what the local extension says....
Last spring frost date confusion - People quote different last spring frost dates for the same area depending on their risk tolerance. Last spring frost dates are important to home Gardeners to help them plan when to set out frost-sensitive annual flower, vegetable and even tropical container plants.

Last Denver frost dates: In Denver the last spring frost date at a 50 percent confidence level is May 2nd with a growing season of 157 days. If you want to be 80 percent statistically confident it's May 12th and 90 percent confident, May 18th. All dates are based on 47 years of data. The latest last frost date was June 2, 1951.

Last Colorado Springs frost dates: Dates are not very different considering their 6170 feet elevation versus Denver's 5,290 feet. It is May 5th for 50 percent confidence (153 days), May 13th for 80 percent confidence and May 18th for 90 percent confidence based on 25 years of data. Their latest date was June 3, 1951.

Place your bet - Once you know your last spring frost date information, you are ready to place your bet for beating the last spring frost and maximizing the growing season. Simply plant out your tender annuals and see what happens!
Yea right......
