On the main vine, what is the best place (footage wise) to "set" pumpkin for biggest girl?

Rule of thumb is anywere over 10'. But you should set several on the main and keep track of there growth and pick the fastest best looking one befor they get above vollyball size.

8-10' out used to be the "golden zone". I remember Ron Wallace saying this winter he thinks 12' out is the best.(This way you have more plant behind the pumpkin) Can't argue with his results! kilr

There have been some large pumpkins grown that were less than 10' out. You may want to pollinate the closer ones, and see how they do early on. You can let your secondaries grow longer, to get more plant area before the pumpkin. It will give you a better chance of a successful pollination, if the weather is real hot in the summer there.

if you pollinate after 12 ft you have a couple things going for you. one as mentioned about you have a larger food factory to feed that pumpkin two, if you run into a problem mid summer with the stem and need to remove stem and a couple side you will still have enough plant left to feed the fruit. most people pollinate close because they do not have the patience to wait for the proper time. an early pumpkin really means little. its the end result that counts
