Dill statue knocked over

A larger-than-life wood carving of Nova Scotia pumpkin king Howard Dill was knocked over in Windsor early Friday, Windsor RCMP said in a release.

The vandalism took place under the cover of darkness at a site on Water Street, police said. Road signs in the same area were also vandalized.

In 2004, Mr. Dill, pioneer of the giant pumpkin, was honoured in downtown Windsor with the unveiling of a towering English-elm statue carved in his likeness by Grand Pre artist James McMahon. Mr. McMahon also created a giant wooden pumpkin out of a 300-year-old elm tree to stand at the statue’s side.

Police said the carving of Mr. Dill didn’t break.

Mr. Dill is a champion pumpkin grower in the Annapolis Valley who is famous for producing gigantic gourds for competition.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Anonymous tipsters could be eligible for a cash reward.
