One of my plants is vining out and is in the stage of being almost ready to touch ground. I procrastinated a little to long on putting support under the vine and now have a small split (lengthwise) just above the ground at the stump. So far the plant does not seem affected. Should I mix up some Captan and apply it as a paste or just leave it alone.

Lengthwise is not a problem now if it is cross wise you will have an issue. I would keep a close eye on it it will heal itself with a nice scar.

make a captan paste and wet some cloth strips down with the captan paste, then wrap around loosely. This is vital to decrease the potential for infection to the plant. It is an easy fix, nothing to sweat about.

My 689 last year had a lenghtwise split that I saw and I just let it go with no problem. After harvest I found a crosswise split that I missed. It was hidden by a leaf and was at least a third of the way through. No treatment to either one and no apparent rot or disease problem.
