I have two plants growing back to back in the same patch 6 feet apart. 1446Werner & 1044Privitera. the 1446Werner was started one week to the day before the 1044 was started. both were put in the patch same day the 1044 being a very vigorous caught up with the 1446 in leaf count both being at the 5 leaf stage.the 1446 having much larger leafs.
years past I have used drip, soaker hose, etc, etc. this year been watering by hand measuring the amount of water each plant received. the 1446 seems to need almost twice as much water as the 1044? would the leaf size be the reason? oe that the 1446 is a week older? or maybe these crazy plants are all just a little different.

Ed, so far my 1446 seems to drink up water a lot faster than the 1180 Daletas or the 1420 LaRue. Like yours it is also one week behind the other two and both the 1420 and 1180 are far more aggressive growers.

Are you waiting for the leaves to start wilting? Is that how you are determining the need for water?

the 1446 just wasnt "perky "enough with the amount of water she was getting. started adding half gallon more when watering she looked like she wanted more.

Chiming in on the 1446....My 6 plants were all germinated, potted, & set outide on the same days. The 1446 has 3-4 more leaves than the other plants and looks very healthy. However, on two warm days (not particularly hot) the leaves had a droopy look. So far, I haven't given it any more water than the rest. 80's are forcasted - I'll keep a close watch!!

I'm with Shannon on this,, bigger plants,,more leaf area,,higher transpiration rates,,this goes with a bigger root area too,,,so even though you need to be careful,,more water might be required,,,try some misting when those leaves droop,,,might just be a plant that requires that,,also a good idea to water outside the area you "think" the roots are and keep enlarging that circle everytime you do water. Like I said,,be careful,, one thing these young plants need is to develope a bigger root system,,,easy to baby them and get them too wet at this point.
