I am a begginer, but after reading some of the diary's, I see some more experienced growers have had alot of seeds not come up also, is it common, I had seeds not come up and they were from big pumpkins (from growers here who were nice enough to give them to me, I'm thankful) and I thought I did everything right, from soaking, filing, to planting in good dirt.

I've only been doing this for a couple years but never had a seed not germinate until this year. Unfortunately it was the 1097 Beachy...to say I was heart broken is an understatement so to answer your question, yes it does happen.

yeah I had all my seeds germinate exept the 1302 zuhkle one of my best seeds ...o well thats just how it goes. Ive had it germination for 15 days and nothing so it just wasnt meant to be. That stinks not to have a 1097 beachy germ those cost a preety penny and I believe their almost all gone.

Me and my bro are having a hell of a time getting seeds to grow. First I had problems with my heat pad,Now it looks like I got some bad staring mix or I contaminated it some how. The seed sprouts and then dies before it gets to the surface. We did not have a problem with Watermelons or Bushel Gourds and those can be tricky sometimes. If you need some more seed let me know and I can send you a bunch. I just started some more seed yesterday with new starting mix,new pots, and a new location. Good Luck

Your seed starting methods determine your success rate. Last year I believe we were under 50%. This year over 90%. We switched to a sterile medium. Nothing high-tech either.

I lost 10 of 12 plants last year due entirely to a faulty beiefe that I had the right temp when in fact my soil temps were around 95 degrees. This year, I got a digital probe type soil thermometer, kept soil temps at all times below 90 degrees and above 80 degrees, and have had 9 of 11 come up. (There is a question as to the vitality of the seeds in the two that didnt come up.)

12 for 12 germinated here under very closely controlled temperature & soil moisture.
The 869.5 Calai '99 seems to be "out of gas" since after germinating in a baggy it has failed to break the soil. I dug down to it & found the emerging seed coat partly opened. I began measurments yesterday. Despite using some "tricks" the poor thing has pretty much given up. Tomorrow morning we perform surgery.
Really old or improperly stored seeds eventually lose the carbohydrate stores they need to get going.

I think there must of been a few old seeds, I followed the papertowel baggie way, 2 have come up, a few more have half way come up and the rest are'nt doing a thing, I followed the directions exactely for the baggie way.
