OK...Brooks provided a link to the technical definition as HA occurs in soils naturally. You can also but HA in liquid, powdered & pelleted form. This HA is derived from leonardite which is usually found underneath either of two old coal mines that are actively mined for this purpose.

Bagged/bottled HA supplements are used but the Heavy Hitters. HA helps improve soil nutrient exchange.

If you decide to try HA make sure to follow the rate instructions carefully. While there is no salt issues to contend with, you should still not apply more than directed.

...sooo Steve...what might one expect from an over application of HA...if one were to have followed some poor advice and maybe added TOO much HA? Thanks in advance...Duff

duff,

Read the abstract here:

http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publications.htm?SEQ_NO_115=135434

In all likelihood, no harm will come to anything but the applicator's wallet. But some crops continue to increase yield with progressively higher rates then at some point the result turn around & the yield starts decreasing for reasons unknown. Like many things in nature we need to strike a balance.

When you say "over application", how heavy was heavy?

I put down 20 pounds Humic Acid for 1000 square feet.

If you put down the 50 pounds we all bought no need to worry. If you get right down the it the HA we have is nothing more than relly, really old compost. I put down the entire 50 pounds over my whole patch and you have seen the size of it.

Thanks for the replies. I applied 50 lbs HA on 1200 sq ft.
Trying to identify reason for slow/no growth. That abstract Steve, may be the answer...Typical response curves showed enhanced growth with increasing HS concentration, followed by a decrease in growth at high concentrations. Time will tell? Duff

I would attribute slow growth to the cool weather we've been having here in New England. The soil is cold.

That said I applied 20 lbs of Humic Acid to 2000 sq ft today. ;o)

Last fall I layed down 1.75lbs per 100 sf, (Green Smiths HA), tilled, in the Wiz patch only. I have been gardening and ammending in an adjacent area next to the patch, but no HA. This spring when all was wet, one could see the difference in soil color. The Wiz patch was alot blacker than the garden area. I was really amazed it changed so dramatically. Worms in abundance, it assisted in breaking down the leaves I added at the same time. Everything I read about this reads that this is good stuff, time will tell.

I liked the granular humic acid from GreenSmiths, it cost me $20 for the 50lb bag and $30 to ship it to me from Texas, and I love it.
