Is it ok to water the plants with a sprinkler or should I avoid overhead watering the entire plant.

hand watering under the canopy is better if you have the time to do it. you use a lot less wate when you direct it exactly where its needed.
theres less chance of splashing germs etc from the soil onto the plants well.
overhead watering is not the worse thing you can do. we sometime water overhead three and four times a day for a couple minutes each time (to mist the plants on really hot days ).

I assume your water source is your own well, then what Pap says goes.

If you are in a big city, then I would not. The reason is that sodium is present in large municipal water systems and that will have a very large impact upon your growth potential. Our plants HATE sodium, especially on the leaves.

most cases it is fine to do this in very hot climates. I used city water the last two years and my sprinkler cooled and watered my plant. It was on and off 11am to 4pm most days. Growth was not hindered for me with very large weight gains still present, but you do have to watch for disease prevention, especially mildew and fungus.
