hi all. i have a little problem with bind weed, every fork turned gives me a few mins picking out the roots. i understand this is the best way to get rid, but if i leave a small part of it, it comes back up with avengance, and an all new root system to deal with. so the question is, has anyone found a way to kill bind weed? without killing the garden. i can answer my own question by saying use round up, but is there any thing better, or shall i just keep diggin LOL.

only option besides round up is to keep removing foliage...eventually the plant will starve.

thanks shannon, i guess starving the plant from sun light will eventually kill it off. only im thinking that the roots will sit / grow without me knowing. this plant is an ongoig battle.

Some glyphosate herbicide (Roundup) applied carefully so you don't get any on your plants will translocate to the roots and kill it completely.

If you have the time & patience you can pick out all of the roots.

Depending where it is growing you might rip up what you can then cover the area in plastic for the summer.

Roundup at the heavy rate of 3 oz per gallon (41% Original) works well. Make sure the Bindweed is actively growing & around 12" long. Spraying when it is too short or long results in a bad kill.

Beating it up physically may help get the herbicide into the tissue but don't use a muddy shoe to step on it - soil deactivates Roundup. Use a clean stick to whip the vines a little then spray it. Don't maul the vine - just crack it here & there.

Advanced surfactants help get the herbicide into the weeds too but these are not easily located at retail stores here in the States.

Ohh Steve that sounds pretty close to plant abuse to me...hit it with a stick to whip the vines, then spray it with a good shot of round up.

i was talking to my local farmer friend today, and he is going give me 10 gallon of round up, as tremor says it will deactivate once worked in. something i didnt realize, i was working on a 6 month period for safe growing. thanks all im learning more every day!

Bindweed, also known as Morning Glory around here, is a "bulb" plant. It is very difficult to kill, even with Roundup. Ask me how I know. ;-)

I've heard that the best time to kill it is to hit it hard with Roundup in the fall. At that time the plant is "drawing in", and will take up the Roundup and kill it.

thanks cliffWarren, this little plant is giveing me hell. that was my concern that, the plant is so active this time of year, and leaving a small part of root would give it a new lease of life, it makes sence to hit it (not with a whip) when its at its most vunerable. i will try all that has been posted here( even the plant abuse lol), thanks for your replies.
