Just wanted to give other growers the heads up to consider protecting your plants from cutworms. I'd hate to see someone loose a prized plant due to a pesky cutworm mowing it down. I'd like to hear what you do to prevent cutworm damage.

I do what my dad has done for years to tomato plants, take a small stick (about the size of the stem) and place it slightly in the ground and pretty much against the stem. The cutworm can't get around both the stick and stem. My dad never loses a tomato plant to cutworms and he has been doing this forever.

you can cut both ends off old progresso soup cans and put them in the soil as Pap said. For tomatoes, campbells works fine !

I do similar to your dad, Mark. I put two sticks along the stem, and tie a twine around it to keep the sticks close to the stem. I have to take the twine off before it gets too tight, as the stem grows. I'm not sure, but I think I read that the cutworm has to wrap itself around the stem, before eating it, therefore one stick may be plenty.

A buddy of mine told me that you could wrap aluminum foil around the stem, apparently it dulls their teeth so they cant cut it down...hahaha

A 2" wide strip of roofing paper or manilla folder wrapped and buried in a circle around stems works well,,less worry as the they grow and won't hurt anything if you forget and leave it in the patch or garden.
