How long do you wait before you give your backup plants away?

well here in colorado, they are calling for possible snow this weekend, so all plants available stay indoors, if given away they face certain death by an inexperienced grower. I would say it depends on the situation...

When you keep your plants inside, do you keep moving them into bigger and bigger pots? How big? Up to a gallon size? We have had rain for the last few days and I think it's too soggy to plant even though the plants are ready to go out. I've moved our sprouts from 4" pots to 8" pots but now think 1 gallon size might be necessary until it drys out a bit. What do you think?

I play Johny Pumpkin Seed this time of year. Anyone who wants to grow does. No one really WANTS my seeds, so I start extras & give freely to the unknowing, down-trodden & desperate.

I start mine in 1.5 gal pots....then if there is a small delay due to weather, they are still in the ground before any root restrictions takes place. Peace, Wayne

I start mine in 2.5 gallon pots that are slitted on 4 sides and duck taped back together. That way I can transplant without disturbing the roots. I also never let the plant get in any way rootbound, and before removing from the pots, I wet the soil in the pot well so it stays together for the transfer and roots are not damaged. I also mix the soil in layers around the seed in the pot, as the immediate media around the seed is a starter mix, so it can germinate and develop the roots, below that is a growing mix mixed half with my patch soil, and 1/3 of the way down the pot is my patch dirt that it will live it's life in..Hope this helps......

I was going to dump my extras this past weekend as the plants in the ground are growing like weeds. When I went to water them on Sunday I found the deer had eaten a few for lunch, you just never know.
