I was just talking to Dan Carlson and Joe Pukos the other day and was talking about digging around in the pot ''Carefully'' to see if the root has started. Dan asked me if I was a digger, Dan said hes a digger and Joe said he is not, but is tempted sometimes. I myself cant help myself which would put me in the digger catagory. I myself have to see if the root is breaking out from the seed(Just cant help it!!). As long as your super carfull when checking the seed I dont see a problem with it,nor have I ever had a problem with a plant when checking, Just be careful!
So are you a digger or non digger?,LOL Brooks

"Hi, my name is Rocky, and I used to be a digger!"
I went to the paper towel and baggie method 2 years ago and have not had to dig since. My diary shows the process. No more digging for me, now I have time to worry about more important things like - "Will someone eat this icecream so I can have the container for a seed pot!!!!"

I'm with Rock. Germinate them in paper towels and don't transplant them into the pots until the tap root is showing. Then you know for sure you have 'liftoff' before digging and potentially disturbing fragile roots.

HI everyone my name is David.. and I am a recovering digger. It has been about 365 days since I last dug but recent events have tempted me to take it up again. I am fightin the fight though, one day at a time.... one day at a time.

Normally, I try not to dig, but my 1370 Rose is the only seed that hasn't popped up yet. Saturday after my other seeds were up I carefully checked the 1370 and a little nubbin' was pushing out. I put it back in, and it still hasn't popped up. I checked again this morning and it looks about the same as before, except the blunt little root has pushed out slightly more. I peeled off the seed coat and the embryo looks OK as far as I can tell. I stuck it back in the soil mix and prayed (LOL). Am I wasting my time, or is there still hope? Is there something I can do to "shock" it into growing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll post this on the seed starting board, also. Thanks, Charlie

I'm a hopeless digger. I'm going to cross pollinate my wallace 1068 with a venus flytrap, that way I'll have a plant with a 40 foot vine and a fly trap the size of a 1,000 pound pumpkin. Now I can just kick back with a 6 pack on those hot summer days and watch it snatch birds as they fly by. HUH HUH HUH

Use to use paper towel method. Two 1068's failed to germinate, now I soak and plant directly in soil that is in pot. Kept air around 90 to 92 degrees and they sprouted in four days. Dug around edges of seed to help germination and they came up. So I guess I am a digger also, couldn't help myself after last years failure. But I have two 1068's germinated and a big sigh of relief. My buddies 1370 and 670 daigle came up as well. Like this method a whole lot better. Thanks Ron and Dick.

I don't normally dig, as I germinate the seed before putting into the soil and pot. I've had great success with my germinations the last two years. I did dig one after I planted it this year, as it was slow to emerge, but it's up now....so I'm pleased.

I put my seeds in an inverted pot, bottom cut out, and put Seran wrap taped on the "new" bottom. This way I can easily slide the inverted pot off the plant when I put it out. Lifting up the pot and looking at the bottom tells me when there are plenty of roots and it is ready to transplant.

I have been planting 10 years and have never been a digger. After reading this thread I now feel like that I have been missing out on something all those years. Tomorrow morning when I open the lid to the germination chamber I will immediately dig, dig, dig in all those pots.

Had to dig at 3:00 am this morning before I went to work. All my seeds but one are pushing dirt. so I had to do a little investigating. My 1034 Zunino looks to be DOA. I started all my seeds in ziplock baggies and once the root comes out I put them in potting soil. The other 4 are going great. But like I stated earlier, I did a little digging and found that the 1034 just stopped growing after I put it in dirt. I was really looking forward to growing that plant.

I thought I was not a digger until I saw the trenches in the pot. Oh no, now what? I also like to pick at the outer shells to get them off. Always leads to a broken stem but I cannot stop.
